From financial markets to construction finance
Hi. I'm James Wheeler, accountant, tax advisor, and founder of Jameco Construction CFO.
My career started in financial markets, trading the likes of 88 Energy, African Potash, and GW Pharmaceuticals on the AIM 100 and investing in funds. It was high risk, unpredictable, and full of noise. One thing I learned quickly was that no matter what the PR companies released, it was always the financials that revealed the truth.
What started as a personal mission to better understand the companies I was investing in became a genuine passion for the finances behind the business. I retrained as an accountant and tax advisor, joined a leading advisory firm, and eventually moved into tax advisory, helping business owners structure their finances properly and grow their businesses.

Why I started Jameco Group
The more time I spent in the industry, the more frustrated I became. Too many accountancy firms were doing things the way they'd always been done. No technology, no commercial thinking, and no real relationship with their clients beyond year end. Clients were piecing together their financial picture from multiple places: a bookkeeper here, a tax advisor there, maybe an accountant once a year.
That's what pushed me to start Jameco Group in 2017. I wanted to build something different. A forward-thinking practice built around technology that supports clients like a partner, not just a year end service provider.
How construction found us
One referral to a construction client changed the direction of the business. That client introduced us to another, and then another. The conversations were always the same. Their accountant didn't understand CIS, had never dealt with domestic reverse charge, and nobody was looking at their figures during the year. They were growing, but without any real visibility over their financial position.
The more we worked with construction businesses, the more we realised this wasn't something we could bolt onto a general practice. The industry needed something purpose-built. Its own team, its own expertise, and a service designed specifically around how construction businesses actually work.
In 2021, we launched Jameco Construction CFO. And in 2025, we added virtual CFO services to give mid-sized construction firms access to strategic financial leadership without the cost of a full-time hire.
What I do now
Today, I lead strategy, marketing, and client advisory at Jameco Construction CFO. I work closely with our team, personally advise clients on growth and tax planning, and I'm involved in every discovery call we take.
I also run Jameco Practice Advisory, where I consult other accounting firm owners on building specialist practices.
My personal mission hasn't changed since the early days. I want to help construction business owners optimise their tax positions, build wealth, and obtain clarity over their finances so they can make confident decisions about the direction of their business.
